Wizards of the Coast

From Project: Redcap
(Redirected from WotC)

Wizards of the Coast is a publishing and gaming company that among different things publishes the leading roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons[1]. Early in its history, Wizards of the Coast briefly published a different roleplaying game: Ars Magica.

Wizards of the Coast and Ars Magica

Wizards of the Coast bought the Ars Magica franchise from White Wolf and published Ars Magica from 1994 to 1996, producing some Third Edition products. They then discontinued all roleplaying products to "concentrate on their core business of collectible card games" (which were immensely popular in 1996). Ars Magica was sold to Atlas Games in 1996.

Wizards of the Coast subsequently re-entered the roleplaying game business when they bought Dungeons & Dragons in 1997[2].

Footnotes

  1. WotC published D&D from its Third Edition, through the 3.5 and 4E editions, and will soon publish its fifth edition. Roleplaying games, including D&D, still consist of but a small part of its business.[citation needed]
