A pretense in the context of a Faerie creature is a minor power that enables it to manifest more or less ordinary abilities, such as the Ability to craft an item[1]. Pretenses were introduced in RoPF.

The main difference between Pretenses and Abilities is that faerie characters can't improve their Pretenses through experience points[1]. Instead, they must use the method outlined in Chapter 3 of RoPF.
