Malinbois Visitors

The Visitor's Book of Malinbois

(Last update: 19/10/96)

A huge man stands before you, perhaps seven and a half foot tall. The full suit of chain mail armour strains to keep the massive bulk of his body inside. His shoulders are almost as wide as the gateway he stands in. Across his back is a greatsword, almost as long as yourself. Behind him stand a few other figures but you cannot see them clearly. In a deep gravelly voice he speaks.

"Welcome to Santare Hill. I am known as Id and I am in charge of visitors to this place. Perhaps you would be so kind as to introduce yourselves and state your business."

The speech sounds well prepared as if he has recited it many times before. After introducing yourself, the giant motions and a servant steps forward. He leads you across the courtyard and up the staircase of the central tower. After showing you to the top floor, he departs. Inside there is a large crescent-shaped table. Shelves of mouldy tomes are arranged on the walls. In the corner stands a strange man wearing black robes and bearing a silver mask. He says nothing but gestures towards a small table on which sit a series of old leather-bound tomes, engraved with the symbol of Malinbois. You walk to the table and examine them.

Inside, they read:

Sure enough, at the next new moon, the Archmage Vasha arrives at Malinbois. He is a short, hunchbacked, man dressed in dirty garish red robes. His grotesquely warped face is fixed into a maniacal and slobbering grin. He is accompanied by six tough armed soldiers, each carrying a large sack. Although they don't stand too close, on account of the foul stench emanating from his person.
Lunantha arrives to greet him, with Orphitus, and several other interested parties, in tow. She speaks first:

"I love faeries," he slobbers, shall we begin?"

The two combatants enter the Faerie Regio and prepare for the battle. Various Magi of Malinbois are present to witness the contest. In particular, Madeleine, follower of Guernicus, is present to ensure that the Code of Hermes will be properly upheld. As the Archmage Vasha sits down opposite Lunantha, his soldiers step forward and empty their sacks. An enormous variety of oddments are revealed; phials of liquid, jars of peculiar preserved organs, and other even stranger things. He arranges this vast quantity of Vis around him in a neat circle, close to hand, and turns to face Lunantha, grinning hideously, and fondling his talisman eagerly.

Round 1:
Lunantha unties the draw strings from a pouch at her belt and smiles as she begins the ritual. Vasha also begins chanting, as he does so he reaches down into a jar and throws a small bit of shrivelled flesh into the circle, as the Phantoms start to form...
Between the combatants, two corporeal beings take shape and begin to attack each other. For a moment, the magical energies waver as the beings are thrown apart. Momentarily, a disconcerted look crosses Vasha's face, but his Phantom regathers itself and starts to pummel its opponent, pushing

it back. Tiny beads of sweat start to appear on Lunantha's forehead.

Round 2:
Lunantha takes some more Vis from her pouch, and throws it in. Vasha adds another item from the jar. The Phantoms rejoin in battle...
As before, there is a strange magical distortion in the circle. This time, however, a look of horror crosses Vasha's face as his Phantom falls apart. Raw magical energy seethes over his body, and he reels backwards, knocking over his precious containers of Vis. He screams and clutches at his groin, writhing violently, before becoming silent and motionless. The duel is over. Vasha's soldiers rush forward and pick up his unconscious body, and his remaining Vis, while the startled onlookers ponder the dubious tactics that Lunantha has employed. It was a duel unlike any had seen before. Madeleine mutters darkly about "contravening the Peripheral Code" or some such. It would not be wise to reveal the full extent of the injury suffered by the Archmage, but let it just be noted that his lust will be curbed significantly in future!

I don' t think to be able to give. ( After pausing for a while, as to make sure that his last statements have been fully understood, he turns towards the spot where the mysterious shape waits. Then the magus raises the thick hands and intones with a deep voice an Auram spell. The screech of a peregrine falcon, coming out of an empty sky, is replaced by ste soft rustling of the leaves of the forest; Serina understands that it must be an incantation for speaking at a distance. Then Holernes speaks in the same harsh language he used the first time. The shape does not even make the effort of answering; But the magus turns towards Serina, and answers to her questioning look with a "He will come." Without hurrying, the shape leaves the shadows of the forest. Now more of him is visible; he is dressed with a plain roughhewn cape that barely conceals his sturdy build. A hood obscures his face, and keeps his arms folded under the cape, as if hiding something... or better, as if he expected a sudden attack from nowhere, but the posture is straight, not the hunched stance of the fearful. He stops a few steps from Holernes, in the same frozen, eternal stance of before. Though he does not take the hood off, he does not make any effort of hiding his face. He simply looks as if nothing, nothing could even interest him, as if he wasn' t here--- but a strange, creepy, WRONG feeling grows stronger every moment, as the same air seems to flee in terror of what it cannot understand, making breathing difficult. Even the Mistress of Destruction, storng as she is, can feel a tiny worm of chill fear gnawing at her self-control. Turning, she notices the same in Holernes, who whispers in a croaky voice "This is Heinrich.""

After making sure that the door to Heinrich's chamber is closed, draws a deep breath) My mistress, My life holds no secrets to the brothers in Hermes, and I don' t call myself 'the traveller' for nothing. I have roamed the land almost as far as our minds can conceive, stopping only at the point when self-preservation forbade me from going further for fear of falling out of the borders of the world. And many wondrous things I have seen, indeed; but they are tied to my past, and what is now my present is within the Roman Tribunal, for that is my destination. My amicus told me a tale of a town in Northern Italy in which, every year, the shades of the dead Crusaders who had sworn on God's name to free Jerusalem gather to repeat their quest, forever bound by their vow... ( He stands, and begins sizing the small room with slow, broad steps, until he is behind Serina. Then, after what seems an exceedingly long time to Serina, he speaks, carefully measuring the words.) As I told you, I have no secret on myself to hide. So hear my words, and make of them what you wish. Our Gift is a mysterious thing, mine requires a - specimen - , the seas for me to learn in the Art of Aquam, the deepest forest for the Art of Herbam, and the highest peaks where the eternal winds vent their fury for Auram. This is why I am 'the traveller', always moving to seek the manifestations of the Arts. This is the reason I have to go to Italia; I hope that such a mass gathering of spirits will give me the insights I need on the Arts of Rego and Mentem. This is what I gain from Heinrich, and he demands from me protection, support..... and especially SILENCE. ( Serina seems lost in her thoughts, so Holernes sits again on the creaking stool and, leaning forward, stares into her good eye. The other one starts glowing in response to the vicinity of his headband.) You wanted to bargain, my mistress? we can. As you have surely understood, I don't have to destroy that spirit army, rather to learn from them. So this if my offer: You give me a way of keeping the spirits at bay, even if I think that they will not even notice us, and you, or whoever you choose as fit, may follow us (emphasizes these words with eloquent hand gestures ) at a distance, as Heinrich must not know of you. I warn you, though, that my amicus told me that the spirit army will move towards the Holy Land, so we will follow it. If you wish, take my offering to the Council and then we will work out the details of the agreement. ( as an afterthought he adds: ) Well, I am a bit low on Vis as well, and I have many other interesting stories that I think the Council would be interested into. Agree?"

Recently I have come across an ancient Egyptian scroll that hints of a method to increase the strength of the Aegis. I am close to translating this scroll and feel that after I have converted the methodology to the proper Hermetic form, Covenants throughout the order will be able to strenghten their Aegis to a magnitude previously unheard of!! In addition, while exploring the ruins of a Covenant, I stumbled upon an ancient Mercurian ritual that...well, I think that it would be best to keep this information guarded as those Mercurian priests in Doissetep tend to get a little over zealous when they find out that there is a remnant of Mercurian Lore not in their possession!
