Literally "magicians" or "wise ones" in Latin, a magus is a wizard who belongs to the Order of Hermes. The plural of magus is magi.

The feminine form is maga and the feminine plural is magae. The feminine plural is used only for an all-female group; a group of mixed or unknown gender would be referred to by the masculine plural, magi. Medieval attitudes toward gender notwithstanding, magae are full equals of their male peers in the Order of Hermes.[citation needed]

Formally the term also applies to other members of the Order of Hermes, such unGifted Redcaps. Most uses of the word ignore such technicalities.
